WAD around the world

World AIDS Day in SCORA

One of the major focuses of the Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS (SCORA) is the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS, advocating for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, including treatment, care and eradication of stigma and discrimination that follows. That is why IFMSA supports the joined international theme event World AIDS Day ever since the beginning of SCORA in 1998. World AIDS Day activities join together efforts of medical students literally from all over the world.

World AIDS Day 2008

This year, in a pre-WAD survey made to assess the events planned for the WAD celebrations, we got over 49 answers from different countries in the 6 continents including:
Nigeria , Egypt, Slovakia, Costa Rica , Lebanon, France, Greece, Poland, Croatia, The Netherlands, Malta, Azerbaijan, Austria, Chile, Indonesia, Germany, Turkey, Estonia, Brazil, Finland, Ecuador, Peru, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Latvia, Spain , El Salvador, Tunisia, Italy, Macedonia, Kenya, Colombia, Bulgaria, Sudan, South Africa, Québec, Palestine, Jordan, Taiwan, Peru, Portugal, Bahrain, Jamaica, Canada, USA and Panama.

Firstly the responders were asked if they were planning to have a WAD celebration and as a result 48 answers were positive.

Those who replied that were interested in having a WAD celebration were asked what activities they had planned. There were different answers to this question with a wide range of plans. The most common concepts were celebrations with concerts, STOP AIDS parties, Movies related to HIV/AIDS airing such as TRANSIT produced by MTV, contests and games about HIV/AIDS prevention, questionnaires about HIV or lectures about HIV/AIDS awareness in universities and schools with specialists and PLWHIV/AIDS.

Many of the responders also plan to promote WAD by posters and leaflets, theme t-shirts, condoms and red ribbons distribution as well as info stands in student dorms, youth centers, universities, main town squares and other popular places.

Promotional strategies include also media like TV and radio shows as well as newspapers articles.

Some of the WAD coordinators are also planning marches through their cities to show support to PLWHIV/AIDS.

Others are planning workshops targeting medical students in order to raise awareness about the stigma and discrimination towards PLWHIV/AIDS.

42 of the Countries involved in the celebrations already ordered the WAC package and plan to use it during their activities.

IFMSA is also promoting the use of the “Take the lead “ pledge in order to strengthen the global response and to join the global efforts to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The AIDS Run 2008 was a great succes.

In the small city of Aalborg, on a grey Sunday the 30th of November, more than 300 people paid 17 euro and ran 5 km to support the fight against AIDS. After 2 months work, the 6 organising teammebers could celebrate donating more than 5000 euro to the AIDS foundation and having put focus on HIV/AIDS problems. Regional TV covered the event with interviews and footage from the run. This was the first event open to the public that this almost newly founded LMO organised, and we are planning to make it an even bigger run in 2009!
With a budget of only 100 euro the event was only made possible by contributions and help from local and national businesses and shops.

It took 6 people 2 months to organise it, 5 of the organisors were unexperienced in making projects...now they are the kings of the project world :-)

On the eve of WAD in Azerbaijan we opened new AIDS topics in most popular youth forums of Azerbaijan: www.day.az and www.netvork.org. By this we gave information about AIDS, prevention and testing methods of HIV. We estimated that 2000 people read these topics. We published video advertisement for our campaign prepared by Azerbaijan Public Television at Facebook and You Tube (for URL see the report ). Our OC prepared a newsletter and sent to all Yahoo groups of local youth organizations and NGOs to aware youth about HIV/AIDS. Booklets and leaflets distributed and posters attached to inform university students and staff in Baku.

There were street actions in the central spots of the capital, Sofia, big concerts and parties at which condoms and info leaflets were given to the public. The movie TRANSIT was played in a university hall for the students and there were peer educations sessions on HIV/AIDS in the schools.
In Vienna, Salzburg, Graz and Innsbruck this years' World AIDS Day was celebrated like never before in the history of the AMSA:

Besides the old AMSA-tradition, to go out into the streets, distributing condoms and information in the evening of World AIDS Day, we this year managed to:

• get all 4 university-clinics "dressed" for World AIDS Day
• give out about 10.000 red ribbons for people to wear and infomation-flyers about the situation world wide and in Austria
• write articles for student-magazines
• go to three ice hockey stadiums in Austria with huge red ribbons and infomation for the audience
• organize charity-parties for the local AIDS-aids
• show the movie "Transit" at 3 of our four universities for free to the students
• have lectures about HIV/AIDS held by professors of our universities on WAD

FiMSIC's World Aids Day 2008 Campaign "Positiivinen Perintö" ( "Positive Heritage" ) concerned about hiv/aids situation in sub-Saharan Africa and especially social position of women and children in society and the connection between this and the risk of spreading hiv. The idea of the campaign was to discuss about the subject via a fictive life story of an African woman.

On October 2008 we had an introduction course to medical students interested in taking part to FiMSIC's campaign and giving lessons about the subject to middle and upper secondary school aged adolescents. In the course we had both lessons and exercises, which prepared med students for school visits. We also created a website (www.fimsic.org/positiivinenperinto) for the med students and schools, a poster and a brochure containing a cartoon strip. The school visits were performed from the end of October 2008 to January 2009 in Helsinki, Kuopio, Oulu, Turku and Tampere.

In addition to the big campaign local committees had a possibility to arrange smaller events on the World Aids Day.
lecture on AIDS and voluntary testing services, AIDS and human AIDS, psychological counseling for AIDS patients and provided lectures
To commemorate World AIDS Day 2008, MMSA had a week full of activities with the aim of increasing public awareness about HIV/AIDS and safe sex on a national scale. A number of outreaches were held in the busiest towns, including our capital city Valletta and in Malta’s (unofficial) red-light district.. We also organised a number of activities on the University of Malta campus, aimed at educating university students about safe sex practices. These included Piazza Café, where an outdoor café was set up offering students free coffee and cake, as well as educational leaflets and information. Our activities reached a climax with an unplugged concert, with monologues about various topics including HIV/AIDS, gender violence and sexual orientation.
Children are the flowers of our life, but they are one of the most vulnerable persons. Traditionally, our organization works with pupil. We educate young people on the theme of sexual health for many years. We are teaching them in hope to prevent AIDS winner’s going on the Earth.
This year on WAD’s we had read to pupil 8 lectures “True or false about AIDS” in 4 schools and in Latvian University. We lectured about situation in Latvia, myths about reality of disease, dander of intravenous narcotic pricks. We hand out booklets about contrateption, AIDS prevention and danger of non-protective sexual connections.
We wrote an article in youth weekly magazine ”Sirups” about HIV/AIDS symbolic, channels of infection, methods of protections.
